For many builders, 2024 was a year of challenges. Rising inflation, volatile costs, and unpredictable markets made it harder than ever to stay ahead. Leads dried up, deals fell through at the last minute, and the pressure to manage cash flow and keep projects on track only intensified.
Yet, amidst these difficulties, some builders thrived. Those who invested in systemisation, marketing, and robust business processes not only weathered the storm but also achieved remarkable results. By focusing on professionalism, consistency, and a commitment to continual improvement, these builders proved that success is possible even in uncertain times.
This Year in Review showcases how forward-thinking builders raised the bar in 2024 and how APB has worked to support the industry through education, innovation, and community.
The State of Residential Construction Industry Survey & Report
The State of Residential Construction Industry (SORCI) report has become a vital resource for builders, offering clear insights into the challenges and opportunities facing the industry. In March 2024, the fourth installment of the report revealed critical trends from 1,817 builders. This year, participation in the survey grew to an impressive 2,240 builders, highlighting the growing demand for benchmarking and actionable data.
Key Insights
- Financial Literacy: While financial understanding continues to improve, the latest data revealed that only 11.4% of builders could correctly calculate the Work in Progress Accounting Adjustment (WIPAA). This underscores the ongoing need for better financial management education.
- Lead Generation: Lead quality remains a major challenge, but the percentage of builders citing it as their top sales challenge dropped from 45.9% to 33.5%, reflecting progress among those who have adopted proactive marketing strategies like content creation.
- Systemisation and Profitability: Builders with systemised processes performed better financially. For example, builders with a documented sales process achieved a median gross markup of 25% compared to 20% for those without. This reinforces a key finding from 2024: systemisation is essential for the success of a building company.
Emerging Trends for 2025
The data also highlighted shifting consumer preferences, with increased demand for energy-efficient builds and smaller, cost-effective homes. Builders who adapted to these trends by emphasising value and clear communication saw improved conversion rates and client satisfaction.
The 2025 SORCI Report, set to be published in February, provides builders with a blueprint for navigating market pressures and positioning themselves for success.
